Pupillages

12 month pupillage commencing in September 2011

We intend to offer one 12 month pupillage commencing in September 2011 on the following terms:

Funding: up to £30,000 (£5,000 of which may be drawn down during BVC year)

  • Deadline for applications: 4.00pm on 25th June 2010
  • Interviews: within 4 weeks of deadline
  • Offers: within 6 weeks of deadline (subject to Bar Council rules)

We offer pupillages to candidates who we consider to be potential tenants. Accordingly, pupils are assessed throughout their pupillage for their suitability as tenants in Hogarth Chambers.
We offer IP pupillages and mixed practice pupillages. An IP pupillage involves exclusively IP work although IP pupils are offered the chance if they wish of seeing a selection of cases involving those areas of Chancery/Commercial law which are relevant to an IP practice. A mixed practice pupillage involves the pupil spending time on Chancery/Commercial work as well as IP work. In a mixed practice pupillage, the balance between IP and Chancery/Commercial work will be a matter for discussion between the pupil and his or her supervisors.

During their 12 months with us, pupils usually sit with four pupil supervisors. They may also sit with other members of Chambers either for a short period or for the duration of an interesting case.  Pupils also take part in Hogarth’s regular internal focus group meetings, at which we discuss recent developments in the law.

There are regular meetings between pupils and the clerks where forthcoming hearings in areas of particular interest are identified and arrangements are made for the pupil to attend.

Pupils are encouraged to attend hearings with their pupil masters at the European Patent Office in Munich and the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. We reimburse travel and accommodation expenses for these attendances.

It is important to us that pupils feel that they are obtaining the maximum benefit from spending a year at Hogarth and members of the Pupillage Committee regularly meet with pupils to review their progress and address any concerns in confidence.

We may also offer other pupillages (e.g. third six month pupillages) to run concurrently with all or part of the 12 month period referred to above.
